How to Control Shim Tooling Costs

Referring that shim tooling costs would quickly increase the budget of a prototype or short-run production project, this paper states that SPIROL has several manufacturing methods that could eliminate or greatly reduce tooling expenditures. It briefly details about some of the SPIROL's production technologies such as CNC laser cutting, operational setup and OD/ID combo tooling, and compound tooling which are used in shim manufacturing along with their advantages. The paper highlights though tooling may be the preferred method because of the increase in quantities and project life expectancy, tool-less technology would be the most cost effective solution for prototype and sort run shims. Also presented in the paper is a simple formula which determines the best method for each project for both tool-less technology part and tooled part, by suggesting that SPIROL's team would help in analyzing the best potential production method.
