How to Improve Product Design and Manufacturability with the Coiled Spring Pin

Stating that examining not only the product design but also entire assembly process would help in achieving optimal low cost design, this paper presents cost reduction of individual components, along with preparation and assembling cost, are the best ways to reduce the overall cost of the assembly. It explains that coiled pin which is a self-retaining fastener designed to absorb forces is the best example of a fastening product, that improves the life of the assembly with reduced warranty costs. The paper points that wide tolerance can be obtained in holes by using coiled pin, that could be utilized in holes that have simply been drilled which reduces the cost of hole preparation. Also listed in the paper are features of the coiled pin such as burr-free ends, controlled insertion forces, and symmetrical design which makes it as the ideal component for semi or fully automated assembly systems.
